UK passport photos differ from US and most other countries in two important ways: the background must be light grey or cream (not white), and since the 2025 rule change, photos must be taken within the last month — far stricter than the US six-month rule. The UK uses the standard ICAO 35×45mm format.
What Makes This Specification Unique
Background must be light grey or cream — pure white is NOT acceptable (opposite of US)
Photos must be taken within the LAST MONTH (changed from 6 months in 2025)
Glasses ARE allowed (unlike US/India) but with strict no-glare conditions
HM Passport Office has certified specific apps (like Smartphone iD) for digital submissions
Recent Changes
2025: Photo recency rule tightened from 6 months to 1 month.
Common Rejection Reasons
Pure white background (must be light grey or cream)
Photo older than one month (stricter than most countries)
Glare on glasses
Shadows on face or background
Red-eye
